It is only when the sun really comes out that you remember how hard it is to find clothes that are comfortable to wear when the temperature sky rockets. Suddenly 90% of your wardrobe becomes unwearable.
I am away all Summer so I need to get my act together as there is nothing worse than perspiring and feeling clammy and uncomfortable or dragging the wrong clothes in your suitcase, quickly realising and then desperately having to hit the shops when you get there!
So what works in the extreme heat?
You have to focus on looser cuts and natural fabrics like cotton, synthetics are just a nightmare. You need the looser fit to allow the air to circulate which keeps you cooler.
For the beach I keep my routine simple and it is a light cotton shirt over my swimsuit, forget elaborate kaftans especially if you have kids and you are up and down to the pool or toilet. I have three from MiH which I wear in rotation, check out Mes Demoiselle, Acne and H&M which has a great linen one for £14.
I also spotted a great pull-on shirt dress on sale at Joseph – you will not want to take it off.
They have a lot of the Mes Demoiselle dresses on sale at Flannels, including the sought after vauderville dress, which is perfect for wandering around towns whilst you are away.
If you don’t want sleeves, then check out the Theory one with the tie straps. I am so tempted as it has such a vintage feel to it. Alternatively, check out the one shoulder in lilac from Mara Hoffman on sale at the Bluebird.
These are all lightweight and you can wear them year after year and it is worth spending that little bit more as you just cannot get away with cheap fabrics when it is hot.
When I am away I tend not to dress up in the evenings as we normally eat on the beach with the kids. It never really cools down much, so again, all those complicated dresses which look amazing in London just wont work. Shorts are hard in the evening as I am always frightened of being bitten or that horrible sticking to the seat syndrome! Dresses are the best way to go.
Loup Charmant is a brand I invested in last year and I think I wore one of the dresses every second day. They are so light and the cotton is so soft that you don’t want to take them off. They will come along in my suitcase again this year.
Rhode Resort is my favourite Summer Holiday brand of 2017. I bought the cotton wrap dress featured below and there isn’t a day that I don’t want to put it on.
Both these brands have a longer, midi and shorter range to cover all heights and body shapes.
Another brand to keep an eye our for is Raquel Allegra; I have a dress from this brand and I am waiting to pounce on another once they go on sale. You have to try the brand on as doesn’t look that impressive on the hanger. They have a few on sale at Diverse .
Mara Hoffman is an expert in Summer dressing and I have my eye on this backless white dress, featured below. I also have two dresses from Thierry Colson that are on my wish list. If these are too long for you, Forte Forte have a brilliant denim one in midi length also on sale.
The Three Graces are famed for their little white dresses and they are on sale too.
Chloe is a great brand to buy in the sales, I found a wonderful white dress on My Theresa which is worth considering. I am praying this Balenciaga one ends up at 60% soon as I adore the fit and shape as well as this one from Philosophy featured below which I have also found in yellow on Farfetch.
I have also ordered a cropped top and cotton trousers combination from Love and Alicia and I cannot wait for them to arrive.
Now, turning to evening wear, I don’t need a lot and I am looking for a couple of WOW dresses to pull on…if we do manage to escape without the children.
Then all you need is a statement flat. I have copied my friend Jo and ordered the No 21 beaded mules (there isn’t anything these don’t go with and they elevate every outfit) as well as a glorious straw pair from The Posse
All I am searching for now is a little cashmere cardigan to throw over my dresses in the evening in case it get’s a little cooler, again check out Etsy or Marks and Spencer.
Next week I will be looking at event dresses which I never buy and then am in such a panic when I have to go somewhere special !
Love to know if this post was helpful !
