Just back from getting my roots done at Cutting Crew, this job is becoming more and more regular, so I used the time today to get some information on how to care for my hair in the sunshine from my stylist Nada.
Last Summer I did nothing with my hair and I came back with a head full of straw . This year I am going to be proactive and have asked the lovely Nada to share her top tips for taking care of your hair in the summer.
Wherever you may be, you are more likely to be out enjoying the glorious sunshine, so if it’s sunbathing, swimming or just being outside, as well as making sure to protect your skin, don’t forget to protect your hair too. Below are some of the things I find most useful in prepping for great hair!
The sun will lighten highlights and fade that colour you have just paid for, so my advice is to wait until you get back from holiday, however for some people that just isn’t an option, they need that fresh colour to feel their best. If that is you, then that’s fine too, just make sure you cover up and protect. Scarfs, hats, bandanas all work.
Protect your new coloured strands with Heat Defence products, leave in conditioners and colour care products.
If your hair is dry and damaged, its a good idea to treat your hair to regular deep conditioning treatments a few weeks before your holiday as this will help with moisture.
If you have darker or red coloured hair, make sure to use UV protective sprays as this will help maintain that fresh, rich look for longer.
Salt water and chlorine will dry your hair out so I highly recommended that you rinse hair throughly with tap water and before you dive in, make sure you protect hair with a leave in conditioner or protecter.
Keratain clients – always make sure you are using Sulphate free shampoo and conditioners for long lasting treatments. If you are planning to have a Keratin treatment before your holiday, keep in mind that salt and chlorine will drastically reduce the effectiveness of the Keratin treatment.
If you are blonde and do not want to go any lighter, cover and protect, however if you are ok with having added lighter tones, then you’re in luck, as spending time in the sun can give an extra lightness and a natural look.
Always remember, your hair is your main accessory – keep it looking fabulous!
