When I was working in a comporate environment I used to drape it over my shoulders and imagine I had the power of Margaret Thatcher paired with the sophistication of Grace Kelly and sex appeal of Marilyn Monroe.
These days I wear my camel coat over distressed denim and and I love that contrast of prim and rock chick.

So my top tips for buying a camel coat!
1) Get the right shade, not the darker shade, think golden shades of honey.
2) If you are not tall, avoid the longer versions go for a shorter lengthand avoid belts unless you are slim, or tie the belt at the back, the sack of potato look is not a good look!
3) Buy the best one you can afford and look for soft glistening fabric, this is not a fashion item , a camel coat is something you will have forever and is an investment .
