At 52 I am suddenly seeing a huge change in my face. Quite simply, my normal dab of botox and facials are no longer going to cut it.
You can lose between 3% to 5% of your muscle mass each decade, after the age of 30, as the nerve signals that control our muscles slow down.
Loss of muscle tone and thinning skin gives the face a drooping appearance, in my case my neck feels like it is merging into my face and I am developing a muzzle effect (lines that develop from your chin to your nose). Also, my neck area was very crepey.
It is so easy to only focus on the lines, but I have learned from Dr. Surbhi to deal with the scaffolding first and she recommended I have a couple of sessions of Morpheus 8.
So what is Morpheus 8?
Microneedles create micro-injuries on the skin. Once the microneedles penetrate the skin, they emit heat from radiofrequency waves that penetrate deeper skin layers, resulting in a tightening of the underlying fat and skin.
How does it work?
The microtrauma triggers collagen production (your body’s natural healing response) to the targeted area. Meanwhile, radiofrequency energy is delivered beneath the surface layers of the skin. This causes clotting in the tissues that itself creates exfoliation and collagen remodeling. The combination of these two technologies allows this treatment to target both the upper and lower layers of the skin (epidermis and dermis). This results in deeper remodeling in the lower layers of the skin which improves the resurfacing effects of microneedling.
Why do this rather than laser or micro needling?
This treatment is more effective than micro needling as it includes radiofrequency.
What happens during the treatment?
When you arrive for your appointment, you begin by disinfecting the treatment area and applying a topical numbing agent. This topical anesthetic requires around 45 minutes to take effect. Once the numbing cream has taken effect, you’re ready to begin your treatment.
During treatment, the micro needling and radiofrequency device will be stamped across the skin, on the treatment area. The tip of the device looks a bit like a garlic press to the untrained eye.
The needles will puncture the skin’s surface and simultaneously deliver radiofrequency energy to the lower dermal layers. You can expect to feel some pressure during this process, but the numbing cream will minimize any discomfort. It felt a bit like an elastic band being flicked on my skin.
Depending on the size of the treatment area, you can expect this portion of your appointment to last 15 minutes to an hour. Th
Is it painful?
I have a high pain threshold, in my opinion I found it uncomfortable, but not painful.
What is the down time?
You look very red after the treatment with little pinpricks visible all over the skin. My face felt hot and the skin felt dry. I went to the shops afterwards and no one looked twice. That night my face stung a little. The next day my skin was dry and felt a bit like sand paper and it took 48 hours for the puncture marks to disappear. Over the next 14 days my skin started to visibly change.
How soon will I see results?
The most significant changes from this skin rejuvenation technology will require some patience, as new collagen takes time to develop in the body. Full results will be visible in about three months from your final session. I did see an improvement after 10 days the skin looked clearer and by neck tighter.
Why did I have Morpheus?
I am 52 and have seen a significant deal of sagging in my jowls and overall slackening of the skin. I had tried creams and face yoga but they just didn’t move the needle, and though I saw improvements, my skin quickly went back to what it was before.
Two years previously I had a couple of Ultraformer treatments (uses ultrasound, no needles) and this really helped but two years on, the texture of my skin had changed and Dr. Surbhi felt I needed this extra boost.
I also don’t have a lot of time on my hands; the treatment itself is fast and the downtime very minimal. I also wanted to make sure the scaffolding of my skin is in the best condition it can be going forward.
Is it worth it?
Perhaps if I wasn’t on Instagram all day I might not be so aware of the slackening of my skin, and therefore, may not have bothered, and just had a facial instead, perhaps prior to an event. But I can already see the improvement in the skin of my neck and my face also feels tighter.
I don’t think that it’s a treatment to start off with but definitely to consider if you feel you have issues with skin laxity. It will lead to a tighter face but you need to consider that you may need a few treatments depending on the severity of the drooping.
The major improvement I am seeing is in the surface of my skin which is much clearer, the patchy skin on my neck is so much better and my jawline feels so much firmer. I noticed a huge improvement in the texture of my skin after 7 to 10 days and this is what you are paying for. You could get a similar effect with other treatments but it would take far longer as you would have to have a lot more treatments to end up with the same result.
So, it is worth it for me. If my drooping was more severe I may have considered Threads but this is where a good practitioner comes in; they will advise you what the best treatment is for your own individual issues.
