The older I get the less I wear shorter dresses!
However, when I am on holiday and have a tan I think I can still get away with something thigh skimming. Back in London, I feel the light is too harsh, and as I truly and deeply hate tights, I won’t wear a shorter dress in winter.
I think everyone is getting a little bit tired of midi and flowing robes, so much so that when I recently checked my wardrobe I had to place an embargo on loose longer shaped dresses!
I think that if you go for a sleeve in a shorter style dress it is easier to carry off over 40. Also a ruffle at the sleeve and a more fluted skirt are often more forgiving. Also, think about where you intend to wear the dress; if you want to wear it during an evening out then find a dress that is lined, so that the look is not too beachy.
Below you will find all my favourites:
I bought a couple in the winter sale but the one I really want ( the Kalita one in black called the Gaia ) is still not reduced, so I will have to wait until winter time again, it is not worth the £445 price tag and this brand always ends up 50% off at some point. It is the perfect shorter dress as it is not too skimpy or to ballerina like and the fabric is good enough to take you from day to evening. My other favourite from Loup Charmant is also not on sale but worth putting on your Wish List .
I was tempted by the Rhode Flora mini dress but I think it is best suited to someone under 40 or someone not as tall as I think the volume of the skirt is too tricky to carry off for me.
They are perfect for evenings out on holiday and I will be wearing my green Kalita (called the Pegasus) with last years closed mules and a simple clutch. You can find similar ones here from Net a Porter, (this one is on my Wish List)
The white one below is from the winter sale and a brand called She Made Me, I am going to pair with this straw clutch I found in a charity shop and my Mansur Gavriel mules. Check these simple Tkees flip flops, they are unbelievably comfortable and will go with everything. Check out this phenomenal Whistles straw clutch I have ordered, it will go with everything and now just £39, not to mention this one from Banana Republic.
In the past I have been dreadful at bothering to take the time to finish outfits properly, but it really is what makes the difference. Sometimes it’s best not to bother buying another dress or top but to think about a great clutch which will elevate what you already have.
