The Power of the ‘clean aesthetic’
Today, I was catching up with one of the most impressive women that I know, Foo Mei-Zee.
I am completely obsessed with her skincare brand, Calecim. She is so wise; one of those women that you want to write down everything she says! We were talking about how as we get older, less is more. She came up with the best quote from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s ‘The Beautiful and Damned’…
“Well, because you are so clean. You’re sort of blowy clean, like I am. There’s two sorts, you know.. One’s like Dick: he’s clean like polished pans. You and I are clean like streams and winds.”
Clean is the word we both landed on, so what does this mean?
When you are younger this concept just doesn’t enter your mind. As you get older, shiny hair, clear skin and a healthy body is as good as it gets. That is where I put my effort (and any spare money).
Clothes are still my obsession, but the older I get the less I can be bothered with all the trends as it is just so much work, and in any case I know that I look better in a simple t-shirt! Foo and I agreed that we still want the odd absolutely bonkers piece (a la Man Repeller).
Once you accept that a clean simple palette is the way forward, it frees you from the shackles of looking for the new, I am happy with better versions of what I already have, and I shift my focus to maintenance.
Celebrities that mirror that ‘clean aesthetic’ still look as great now as they did when the pictures were shot. I always ask myself before I buy anything; would Lee, Carolyn or Sarah buy it?? If not, then I walk away. I have featured a few pieces below which I personally love, think shopping should be 90% research and 10% actually purchasing and no one knows what suits you better than yourself. So trust yourself !
